Holiday Thief, whiner of the week, Ken OkelThe holiday season is back and so, unfortunately, are the bad guys. While there is joy in the air, there also is the problem of holiday crime. Those who eagerly await the start of the holiday crime season are our Whiner of the Week.

These people will try to scam a charitable donation out of you, grab your shopping bag when you’re not looking, and steal the presents from under your Christmas tree or help themselves to the loot in the rest of your home. All of these crimes are done with the knowledge that they will cause a lot of emotional distress and hardship.

Sadly we can’t make the holiday season crime free but we can try to protect ourselves and look out for our neighbors.

Don’t make a donation, unless you know about the intended destination and whether the money is really going there. Don’t be in such a rush that you lose track of your surroundings. And let your neighbors and even your local law enforcement know if you’ll be away from home for an extended period of time.

The best gift you can give yourself is a little extra protection. It’s okay for the bad guys to have nothing more than a lump of coal in their stockings this year.
