You know that distractions will slow people down. It will keep them from focusing on the big tasks. They can hurt productivity. Sometimes you, as a leader, may be creating some of those distractions. So what are you doing?

Next let’s talk about bending the rules. Are there certain policies that everyone has to follow but because you’re higher up in the organization, you don’t necessarily have to do it. But by not following the rules and people noticing it… that’s a distraction.

Because they’ll be saying, “Hey, he doesn’t do that stuff. Or she never does that. Why do I have to do?

Do you want these conversations to happen? I understand, in your position, you don’t have to follow all the rules. But sometimes maybe it should be your pleasure to do so because it sets a good example and turns off that fountain of gossip that can paralyze an organization.
