I’m guessing it may be hard for a new employee to be productive in your organization. It’s not easy to start a new job and sometimes there’s little things that confuse you, that hold you back.

I remember when I worked in TV news, I’d go to a new station in a different city and have to learn all the local lingo, how things are pronounced, even just how to get around. What was the best way to get to places?

It took me a lot of time to learn and this unfortunately, it wasn’t in the HR briefing and it wasn’t some sort of manual. So I had to learn, often, by making mistakes. That’s not effective. Not productive.

In your world, when a new employee starts, are you thinking ahead to those little details that someone needs to know?

Do you tell them that Friday is a casual day? Do you tell them that, “Friday is a a great time to catch up on work this day because of this thing that’s happening or not happening.”

You need to take a step back and think about what you do, day to day week to week month-to-month and think about all those little details that aren’t covered anywhere else. Write them down, tell them to the new employee, make his or her life that much easier. They’ll get up to speed and be able to help your organization that much more.

Make sure your new employees are productive and happy.
