We expect everyone involved in the Federal Air Marshal Service to be a hero. The agency is our Whiner of the Week after a government investigation has found evidence of cronyism and discrimination.
Apparently, senior officials at the Federal Air Marshal service think it’s okay to make fun of veterans, homosexuals and minorities.
Instead of focusing on protecting our airplanes, they thought it was better to spend time playing a version of the game,”Jeopardy!” It designated categories for veterans, women, blacks, Hispanics and homosexuals with derogatory titles, like “Our Gang” for black employees.
It gets worse: Of the agency’s workforce, a quarter felt they’d been discriminated against, 47 percent said they “fear retaliation” and 55 percent felt favoritism is “tolerated.”
The agency performs what most of us believe is an important function. It’s a serious job and you’d hope that those who choose to serve our country would take it seriously.
